Overview

The City of San Luis Obispo Public Works Department selected Cannon to provide on-call services for a variety of civil engineering and construction management projects for the Capital Improvement Plan. Under this agreement a variety of projects were completed, such as CDBG curb ramp design, pavement repair, street reconstruction, microsurfacing design, street widening, and silt removal.

CDBG Curb Ramps 2011 – Phases I and II: civil engineering, surveying, and construction engineering services for yearly maintenance program which included new construction, reconstruction, or modification of various curb ramps and crosswalks. All ramps were proposed to be designed to meet Caltrans and ADA standards; however, in certain circumstances, existing grades made this impossible or impractical. Cannon worked with the City to develop criterion for a maximum ramp length and implemented this criterion into our designs. Cannon also worked with the City to ensure that a design exemption was issued by the City for these locations.

  • Phase I: review and analysis of 47 ramp locations; 41 required redesign.
  • Phase II: review and analysis of 80 ramp locations; 75 required redesign.

Chorro Pavement Repair: Project included reconstruction of Chorro Street from Higuera to Palm Street; address drainage issues along the gutter; and redesign curb ramps to be ADA compliant. Work included a topographic survey to identify existing drainage issues and reconstruct curb ramps; utility research; preparation of construction drawings; specifications at both the 90% and final design levels; and an engineer’s cost estimate at the 50%, 90%, and final design levels for recommended improvements.

Johnson Pavement Repair: Heavy traffic and a broken water line along a heavily-trafficked section of Johnson Street necessitated emergency repair of the roadway. Cannon’s efforts provided the City with a design which minimized traffic interference and expedited the overall project. Since Johnson is an arterial roadway, and fronts a hospital, the project was staged so that two-way traffic was maintained at all times. As well, a redundant water main was connected to the hospital facility to maintain water flow in the event of any future water main failures.

Street Reconstruction Summer 2011: Six street intersections were included in this annul program. Work included: modifying or replacing curb ramps to ADA standards; identifying and developing designs for drainage problems; roadway base removals and repairs; pavement grinding, removals, and replacement; utility valve and vault adjustments; and striping and markings.

Street Widening Tank Farm and Broad Street Intersection: To create space for new improvements, the existing curb, gutter, and parkway on the south side of Tank Farm Road was to be removed and the existing paving extended to the existing sidewalk paralleling the road. Work included: topographic survey, utility research, construction documents, SWPPP, and ESCP (Erosion and Sediment Control Plan).
