Overview

A large distribution warehouse and training facility was constructed in Gresham, Oregon for American Honda in 2000. The building featured a large wood panel roof over the warehouse area, a metal roof over the office and training areas, and concrete tilt-up walls at the perimeter and between the warehouse and office/training areas. A portion of the roof collapsed subsequent to a series of snow and rain storms in 2008. American Honda investigated the structure and made modifications and upgrades totaling in excess of $21 million. Soon after, American Honda brought suit against the Developer, Prime Contractor, A/E Consultant, and Inspection Company for alleged design and construction defects. Cannon was retained to provide expert support on behalf of the Prime Contractor. Cannon reviewed reports from the plaintiff’s consultant team, performed calculations to verify member and connection capacities, modeled building elements to determine failure modes, and provided expert testimony during a jury trial. At the trial, the Developer requested permission to use Cannon’s consultant as their witness as well. The jury award from the Prime Contractor was $275,000.
