← Back to Structural Analysis for Commercial Production at Avila Pier

Overview

Cannon was selected to provide structural analysis services for a commercial stunt planned at the Avila Pier. The stunt involved an SUV traveling the length of the pier at 40 miles per hour and coming to a skidding stop at the end of the pier. Analysis was based on the vehicle’s weight and model, as well as pier drawings and variables such as rate of speed. The scope of work for the project included analysis of the pier and a development plan for temporary upgrades as necessary to ensure the stunt would not damage the pier. Specifically, Cannon tested the attachment of the planks to the purlins, purlins to piercaps, and pile-bending capacities to ensure that enough planks, purlins, and piles were engaged to resist the vehicle’s stopping force. Cannon also provided a plan and details as necessary to facilitate the temporary upgrades to the pier. The Bridgestone Tire commercial featuring the stunt aired on Super Bowl Sunday in 2010.
