Cannon Coasters Take on Northern California Bike Route

09/18/2014

-In 2011 we cycled from San Luis Obispo to Santa Monica (the SLOMo).
-In 2012 we rode from Santa Cruz to SLO (along the scenic Big Sur coast).

The Loose Cannon’s cycling team—the Cannon Coasters—is back again, and this time it’s a diverse route through the Northern California Coast beginning at the small coastal town of Jenner (at the mouth of the Russian River) and trailing down to the beautiful seaside city of Santa Cruz. Dates for the Cannon Coasters ride are set for September 19th to the 21st, with a drive to Santa Rosa the evening of the 18th. Over the next three days cyclists will traverse 165 miles along Highway 1 while accompanied by auxiliary SAG vehicles, deviating from the main roadway at intermittent points. Day one will cover the ride from Jenner to Mill Valley north of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge next to the bay. On day two the Coasters will cross the historical city bridge through Golden Gate Park stopping for the evening in Halfmoon Bay. During the final leg of the ride, riders will complete their journey, departing Halfmoon Bay and ending in Santa Cruz.

Along the route Cannon Coasters will see changes of environment ranging from rocky coastlines and open fields to dense wooded trails and cityscapes. A few obstacles loom along the way, such as a winding semi-treacherous route through Devil’s Slide – an area of sheer cliffs not unlike the rockslide zones of Big Sur. Vertical climbs and long stretches between rally and hold points also await as the team makes their way south.

This trip will mark the third event in the series of Cannon’s planned cycling endeavors with an objective to travel the entire California coastline. Good luck and ride safe Coasters!
