The ASI Recreation Center is the central place for most recreation-related activities on campus. The Center features a fitness room, 9 racquetball courts, exercise room, 4 basketball courts, 50-meter pool, martial arts room, 2 sand volleyball courts, 3,400 seat concert venue, and locker rooms. The expansion project provided an additional 85,000 square feet to the facility: tripling the size of the fitness room, adding a wellness center, a new gymnasium and a sand volleyball court, an indoor jogging track, and a new recreation pool.
The team of Cannon Design and Cannon were selected to provide the architectural, engineering, and consulting services for this project. Cannon’s scope of work included the preparation of construction documents, including grading and drainage plans; demolition plan; composite utility plan; horizontal control plans; and a Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan. The project included connection to the campus utilidor. Cannon provided utility design for the connection of hot, cold, fire and water and sewer and gas lines.
Cannon also provided topographic surveys, pothole exploration, hydrant flow survey; and assistance with LEED certification. In addition, Cannon provided construction administration services including bidding assistance, construction observation and engineering, and preparation of record drawings. During the Programming Phase of this project, Cannon’s Project Manager was involved in a presentation to University staff and students about incorporating key elements of sustainable design into the final design for the Recreation Center.
