Overview

The City of Long Beach wanted to replace Shoemaker Bridge to improve traffic flow safety and operational efficiency; increase multi-modal connectivity; and enhance Complete Street elements by providing bicycle, pedestrian, and streetscape improvements on major thoroughfares. The 1,000-foot-long bridge, which opened in 1959, is a major focal point connecting the I-170 freeway to downtown Long Beach. As a subconsultant to HDR, Cannon provided horizontal and vertical control, right of way mapping, boundary resolution, and topographic mapping to support the design project. Cannon’s team facilitated the procurement, review, and plotting of record information for over 80 preliminary title reports for past, present, and future alignments of the existing road system. Cannon coordinated with City of Long Beach and HDR and provided updates on progress and potential design problems that would need to be addressed prior to construction of the new Shoemaker Bridge.
