From our projects to our work space, we are working to reduce the environmental footprint. As an advocate of sustainable practices, we  continuously look  for ways to reduce the impact and resource demand of projects in a cost-effective way. We believe that sustainability is good for business and good for the planet.

Cannon recognizes the growing importance of sustainable design and we are in a position to help all of our clients incorporate environmentally appropriate choices into their projects.

We have full time LEED Accredited Professionals on staff to support clients who wish to pursue LEED Certification for their projects, or to help develop low impact and environmentally appropriate alternatives for any project.

Our extensive experience with projects in environmentally-sensitive areas like Avila Beach and the Guadalupe Oil Field has given us insight into finding effective development solutions while minimizing development impact.

In addition, we have implemented low-impact development and sustainable design solutions in many projects including the following:

Energy Efficiency Studies

  • PG&E Customer Energy Efficiency Incentive Programs, various locations, California: For nearly two years, Cannon has been working closely with PG&E to develop electrical energy efficiency incentives for energy, public works, and industrial markets. Cannon’s role includes assisting the PG&E customer in participating and qualifying for available Consortium Energy Efficiency (CEE) incentives. Specifically, this may involve any or all of the following actions: assessing the existing condition, analyzing drawings and documentation, conducting analyses and assisting with incentive calculations, suggesting alternatives, making global efficiency recommendations for oil wells, field, distribution, and processing facilities and associated equipment and facilities, and verifying the installation of equipment or completion of engineering projects for PG&E customers. To date, Cannon has provided services on over 83 projects for PG&E in the oilfield and heavy industry including Pump Off Controllers, Variable Speed Drives, Viscosity Analysis, Rod vs. Co-Rod Analysis, and review of Rotoflex and Dyna Pumping Units. In addition, we have new contracts in place with PG&E to expand this work into food, agriculture, and other industries.

Municipal Utility Line Installation

  • Thunderbird Water Line: The City of Paso Robles wished to install a new water line to connect their Thunderbird Well Field to their potable water distribution system. The water line installation required crossing of the Salinas River. The original design called for trenching across the river, but Cannon recommended horizontal directional drilling as an alternative. Aside from saving the City significant time and money to complete the installation, utilizing horizontal directional drilling dramatically reduced the environmental impact of the project by not requiring open trenching in the river.
  • Atascadero Sewer Siphon: The City of Atascadero had an inverted sewer siphon crossing the Atascadero River. The siphon had become exposed due to erosion, and Cannon provided a design for replacement via horizontal directional drilling. Again, this solution minimized environmental impact, allowing for replacement of the siphon without requiring dewatering of the river.

University Projects

  • Poly Canyon Village (PCV), California Polytechnic University: With 2670 beds, this housing complex includes three residential neighborhood areas on 30 acres north of Brizzolara Creek at the base of beautiful Poly Canyon. Poly Canyon Village (PCV) is the first GOLD LEED certified project on the Cal Poly campus and is the largest LEED certified project in the CSU system. Sustainable design elements include the following:

    • Erosion and Sedimentation Control plan using Best Management Practices
    • Best Management Practices for controlling and reducing total suspended solids (TSS) and total phosphorus (TP) from stormwater runoff. Examples are fossil filters and vortex separators at the storm drain systems, a bioswale through the center of the site which collects runoff from the upper portion of the site, and Drumm Reservoir which collects all water entering the storm drain system.
    • Exceeds Title 24 energy conservation requirements
    • Operable windows and natural ventilation
    • Recycled 75% of the construction waste
    • 10% of the total value of the materials in the project was recycled
    • 20% of the materials were manufactured regionally
    • Use of low emitting materials such as sealants, paint, carpet and composite wood products
    • Daylight and views from 90% of the regularly occupied spaces
    • Reduction of building footprint
    • New co-generation facility
    • Covered bicycle shelters for over 25% of occupants
    • Covered parking spaces for over 78% of the project’s 1,967 total parking spaces
    • Each building of the project is over 90% residential
    • Open space square footage is over twice the size of the project’s building footprint, thereby achieving Exemplary Performance
    • 30% water reduction after meeting the requirements of the Energy Policy Act of 1992
    • Over 55% of the landscaping not permanently irrigated. Landscape design includes restoration hydroseeding and drought tolerant native or adapted vegetation, to blend the landscape design with the surrounding vegetation and to reduce potable water consumption.
    • Storm water system allowing for ground water recharge and filtering with the use of a retention basin and bioswales.U.S. Green Building Council
      This project was awarded the Outstanding Sustainable Technology Project of the Year for 2009 from American Society of Civil Engineers for the State of California.

Cogeneration Facility

  • Casa Dorinda Cogeneration Facility, Montecito: Cannon was selected to design a cogeneration plant to provide baseload electrical, potable water heating, and space heating for a medical facility at an assisted care facility in Montecito, California. Cannon provided energy balance and technical feasibility analyses, acoustic calculations, specifications for the cogeneration skids, designs for the power, control and instrumentation interconnections between the skid-mounted equipment and facility equipment. Cannon also designed the foundations for the main generator skid, the exhaust stack, and the structure for the one-story cogen enclosure building. The scope of work also included the preparation of permit submittals for the Air Board, City of Montecito Planning Department, Santa Barbara County Planning Department, OSHPD, and Utility Interconnect Agreement.

In addition to this project experience and LEED knowledge, Cannon has taken sustainability and incorporated these concepts into our work spaces. When we outgrew our office in San Luis Obispo, we found an existing building we could remodel to suit our needs. The remodel project used a significant portion of the existing building shell and reused the existing fixtures and other materials as much as possible. This planning not only dramatically reduced our construction costs, but diverted a substantial amount of materials from the landfill as well.

Our new building has incorporated skylights throughout as well as a wall of windows. These features not only provide energy savings by reducing our lighting demand, but create a more pleasant working environment for our employees.
