May 12-14, 2017–Local neighbors, businesses, and advocacy groups have gathered to temporarily transform the 300 block of High Street in San Luis Obispo in what is being called the “High Street Block Party.” The temporary improvements include a parklet located in front of the High Street Deli, bulb-outs to slow traffic and improve pedestrian crossing, and bike parking. This community event is aimed at drawing together residents along and near High Street, as well as locals who frequent the project site.

The project build begins Friday morning with local volunteers using plants, fiber rolls, and temporary materials to section off areas of the street to make room for the parklet—a small park-like area for seating and shade—bike parking, and bulb-outs. The build will be followed by an Eskimo Pie social at 3:00, just in time to welcome students who are biking home after school. A “bike happy” happy hour is being hosted by the High Street Deli with discounted drinks and appetizers for those interested in checking out the project build.

Saturday’s events are the culmination of celebrating the site improvements and community engagement. Activities and events for Saturday include a complimentary bike breakfast hosted by The Nautical Bean and Cannon, followed by a bike train from Hawthorne Elementary,. There will also be a speech from Mayor Heidi Harmon, along with crafts, games, and live music all day long.

The “Block Party” concludes Sunday morning with removal of all temporary features along the project site.
