Charter Oak Unified School District ADA Upgrades

When the Charter Oak Unified School District (COUSD) expanded three of their elementary schools to include a new Learning Resource Center (LRC) at each, site engineering was needed to stay in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The three elementary schools included Badillo Elementary, Cedar Grove Elementary, and Glen Oak Elementary.

Cannon was selected to provide civil site engineering, topographical survey, and construction administration services for the projects. Design services included utility research and investigation; grading plans with striping, paving, ADA requirements, and drainage; public street improvements, where necessary; wet utility plans; and record drawings.

Special circumstances distinguished each project. At Badillo Elementary, Cannon designed a new drop-off area for parents with ADA-compliant curb ramps and minor public improvements in the City of Covina’s right-of-way. At Cedar Grove Elementary, a new fire lane and hydrant were needed to provide adequate fire safety to the new building. Cannon designed a fire-water plan for Cedar Grove in addition to the ADA-compliant precise grading plan. Fire safety expansion was also necessary at Glen Oak Elementary, which Cannon designed by repurposing pedestrian areas for multi-use and to accommodate fire access.
