Golden Hill and Union Road Intersection Improvements
The City chose a roundabout to mitigate high traffic flow through a skewed four-way stop at the intersection of Golden Hill and Union Road. To eliminate the need for extensive property acquisition, a one lane, dog bone-shaped roundabout was designed to accommodate the increased traffic demand, including accommodations for oversized 9-axle transports. In addition, by closing the intersection in its entirety for the duration of the project, the city was able to save millions of dollars in construction costs.
The City selected Cannon to provide construction management, inspection, construction staking, and materials testing. The scope of work included full depth reclamation; and installing new waterlines, sewer, fiber conduits, streetlights, landscaping, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, roadwork, and signage and striping.
As the first “dog bone” style roundabout in SLO County, the project presented unique challenges for the team. Cannon supported with coordination and phasing of detour routes throughout the City to facilitate the full intersection closure; layout and staking for the roundabout’s unique geometry; and coordination of emergency vehicle accommodations during construction.
This project alleviated traffic congestion and accommodated future transportation-related growth, including oversized nine-axle transports.
