Laboratory Buildings Renovation

This project included the renovation of three separate facilities: Building 00001, Building 02466, and Building 20210. Cannon provided structural engineering services.

  • Building 00001: Renovation included approximately 3208 SF of existing office space within existing 36,699 SF.
  • Building 02466: Renovation included office furnishing configuration in existing 6,081 SF of existing office space within existing 63,238 SF.
  • Building 20210: Complete renovation of 11,625 SF Industrial Laboratory Building.

Repair and Construction of Wing 8 in Historic Michelson Laboratory, Building 00005

The project area was located within the existing Wing 8 of Michelson Laboratory, Building 00005. Built in 1945, the Michelson Laboratory has been recognized as a Historic Building. Because of this, special attention to maintaining the exterior character was a critical requirement of this repair and construction project. This was a multi-phased project to repair 5,654 SF of interior space in a portion of Wing 8, Building 00005 as well as the design and construction of a 6,190 SF second floor interior mezzanine. To accommodate the continued use of the adjacent lab spaces, the work in this area required special attention to scheduling. Identification and careful abatement of hazardous materials were included in the work. Cannon provided structural engineering services for this project.

Bulkhead Repair

The bulkhead for the storage magazine had separated from the building roof, allowing water intrusion into the building. The existing connection consisted of tie rods attached near the top of the bulkhead and welded to the building roof.  The repair consisted of replacing the existing tie rods with new tie rods utilizing a turnbuckle to close the separation between the bulkhead and the roof.

The scope of work included development of structural calculations for the structural components and preparation of construction documents.  Scope of work also included construction administration services, including submittal review and RFI responses.  The design was prepared in accordance with the minimum requirements per the most recent International Building Code.
