Recently, the County of San Luis Obispo’s plan to connect Cayucos and Morro Bay via a scenic, multiuse pathway was highlighted in the San Luis Obispo Tribune.

The article explains that the connector project, 15 years in the making, will “allow hikers, cyclists, and runners to travel the scenic stretch of coastline between Morro Bay and Cayucos.” The project will enhance connectivity and safety for cyclists and pedestrians alike. Construction is slated to begin in 2025.

The proposed trail is 1.25 miles in length, with several access points to the shoreline, and six parking locations to accommodate travelers. The trail starts near the site of future Norma Rose Park, east of Highway 1 in Cayucos, proceeding south until terminating at a tie-in to Morro Bay’s bike path along Sandalwood Avenue to the Cloisters Park parking area.

This project is one of many California Coastal Trails that work toward a developing vision, led by the California Coastal Conservancy, for a walkable, bikeable California coastline. It will be funded partly by an active transportation grant from the California Transportation Commission, and partially by several local agencies and stakeholders. There has been positive support from local residents about the idea of a trail. A SLO County Parks survey summarized that 80% of respondents would likely use the trail once constructed, and 90% felt it was an important project for their community.

Cannon is currently providing civil engineering services for the trail design, and will assist with permits, right-of-way coordination, and, soon, final construction documentation. We are thrilled to be part of such an exciting project that will benefit our community!
