Shell Beach Streetscape Project Wins State-Wide Recognition

04/30/2022

Each year, the League of California Cities, County Engineers Association of California, and California State Association of Counties announce the winners of the Outstanding Local Streets and Roads Project Awards. These awards recognize programs in counties and cities throughout California that preserve and protect the public’s investments in improving local streets, roads, and bridges.

The City of Pismo Beach claimed top honors for their Shell Beach Streetscape Project, earning the statewide, 2022, Complete Streets Award.

The Shell Beach Streetscape Project is an 18-block improvement project that enhances safety and quality of life in the Pismo Beach community. The improvements support active use of the public right-of-way, including sidewalk and ADA accessibility upgrades, drainage improvements, roadway resurfacing, new crosswalks, landscaping, streetlights, a new parking lot, and utility undergrounding.

The project incorporated bulb-outs and pedestrian crossings to mediate traffic and improve visibility at each intersection in addition to providing sufficient street parking to maintain business access. The project was approved through the dedicated efforts of the City council, community, and City staff and serves as an excellent case study for other downtown areas.

Patrick Riddell, the construction manager on the project from Cannon, had this to say about the project’s achievement: “This League of California Cities award is a huge accolade, since it won overall project of the year statewide! I’m grateful that Cannon got to contribute to this project with the City of Pismo Beach, and all the team members who worked hard to implement it.”
